I promised myself I wouldn’t write about the Coronavirus. Everywhere you glance there is an article about it. I’ve decided to change it up by considering a result of COVID-19; hoarding. The pandemic turned us into deranged zombies snatching everything up. Deranged since our actions were “insane and disordered.” Zombies, in view of how we acted on “no expert information,” we just believed some guy next to us, or the media, which is just as crazy.
What Happened?
At first people raced to the stores to score paper products like toilet paper, napkins, paper towels, pretty much all paper items. Remarkably, they bought up water, which when you think about it is ridiculous since water is available from the kitchen sink. This all started with a few people hoarding the paper products while others watched and decided to join in.
Nowhere were we told there was a shortage of these products. Acting without thinking, like a zombie, people generated a fear that resulted in hoarding, which led to a crisis, creating a paper shortage. All along we’ve had toilet paper, so why would people assume we wouldn’t.
It’s Madness
Well, now a precedent is set. People worry about the spread of COVID-19 and rush to the store to buy up all the hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies. In turn, this created a panic as more zombies joined in. Now, what a couple of weeks ago we had in stock has gone missing. Even worse, some hoarders are still going to the store to grab the now endangered products even though they still have stock at home.
Toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and the like are out of stock as a result of people hoarding them out of fear. Though we usually have all these products in stock, shelves are empty. None of this would have happened if there was no hoarding.
How to Beat Zombieism
What can we learn from this? STOP! Stop taking actions that have no foundation to them. Listening to people, who you might not even know, instead of getting expert information, makes you a zombie.
You have the ability to engage the brain and use it. When you do, you will notice that the panic is unfounded and your fear will disappear. Take this quarantine time and think; think where you want your life to be. Think about what’s important in life, and enjoy your family. We will get through this together.
